Frequently Asked Questions

Does sugar make you gain weight?

Yes, sugar does contribute to weight gain. The reason for this is because your body will only take on the sugar that it needs. (Used as energy) The rest will either be waste or be stored in your body as FAT for times when you might need food. This is the body's way of making sure you do not starve.

With that said, this includes natural sugars such as fruit. The best time to eat fruit or consume foods containing sugar would be right before you workout (energy) and post workout to replace glycogen (sugar) because your muscles are depleted, it will help get the protein into our muscle cells. If your post workout meal does not contain carbohydrates/sugar, muscle tissue may be broken down to achieve this purpose.

If we do not replenish this energy storage after our workout, muscle tissue will be broken into usable energy source. By not eating anything will therefore result in muscle loss. When we lose muscle, our metabolism will slow down. Subsequently, weight loss will become even more difficult.

Why do we need protein post work out?

After the training, the muscle tissue will be “torn”. We need protein to build and repair these tears so the muscle increases in strength and density. It is important to have a combination of both carbohydrates & protein post work out. Try to avoid fat post work out because it slows down the absorption of both.

What can I do to lose weight in my stomach?

There is no such thing as spot reducing. Any fat you lose comes off in the same proportion it's stored in your body. For example, if you carry most of your fat weight in your hips and thighs (like most women), then the fat inhabiting those area will be the last to go. If you carry your fat weight around your waist as "love handles" (like most men), then your significant other will most likely have something to hang on to right up until the very end of the reduction process.

You can target train your abs with sit ups and crunches and you can get rock hard abs, but until you lose the layer of fat covering them they won't be visible.

That's why strength training is most important.

Yes, you can lose weight through aerobic exercise and dieting, but without strength training you'll also lose lean body mass which lowers your metabolism so your body burns even less calories than when you started the diet in the first place. And strength training is the only way to reshape your body.
